Your Legal Duty to Provide First Aid at Work

Every employer in the UK has a statutory obligation to ensure adequate first aid provision is in place. This is not optional โ€” it is a legal requirement under two key pieces of legislation that apply to every workplace, in every industry, regardless of size or sector.

Our FAIB-regulated First Aid at Work (FAW) course is the recognised route to meeting your compliance obligations, providing your designated first aiders with the comprehensive qualification they need to act effectively and lawfully in a workplace emergency.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) acknowledges FAIB as a recognised industry body, and FAIB membership requires all training providers to undergo independent monitoring โ€” ensuring your team receives a consistently high standard of training.

FAQ

First Aid at Work (FAW) Course โ€” Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. FAIB is recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Department for Education. FAIB is an original member of the First Aid Quality Partnership (FAQP). The FAW certificate it issues is recognised across the UK as meeting the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, which is the primary legislation governing workplace first aid provision.
This depends on your workplace risk assessment. EFAW (1 day) is suitable for lower-risk, smaller workplaces. FAW (3 days) is required for larger organisations and higher-risk environments โ€” such as construction, manufacturing, schools, care homes and most medium-to-large businesses. The HSE's guidance document (GEIS3) provides a decision tool to help employers determine which qualification is required.
The FAIB First Aid at Work certificate is valid for 3 years. It is important to requalify before expiry โ€” the HSE notes that a first aider whose certificate has expired is no longer considered competent to act as a first-aider in the workplace. We also offer a 2-day FAW Requalification course for those renewing.
There is no fixed legal number โ€” it is determined by your workplace risk assessment. The HSE's guidance provides a helpful flowchart (in GEIS3) to assist employers in deciding the required number. Generally, larger workplaces, multi-floor or multi-site operations, and higher-risk environments require more trained first aiders. We are happy to advise based on your situation.
Absolutely โ€” this is the key benefit of our service. We bring the training to you. Your FAIB-registered trainer will arrive at your premises fully equipped. You will need to provide a suitable room with enough space for practical activities. On-site delivery saves your staff travel time and disruption, and is often more cost-effective than sending individuals to open courses.
Assessment is ongoing throughout the course, with trainers providing feedback and guidance as learning progresses. The aim is to give every delegate the best chance of achieving the required standard. In cases where a delegate does not meet the criteria, we will discuss the most appropriate next steps including a reassessment or re-attendance at no extra stress to your business.
Delegates should wear comfortable clothing suitable for practical activity, as the course involves hands-on first aid practice including floor-based CPR exercises. They should bring a photo ID, any relevant medical information the trainer should be aware of, and a notepad if they wish to take notes. All training materials and equipment are provided by us.
We are flexible and will always do our best to accommodate your preferred dates. As a general guide, we recommend booking at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance to secure your preferred dates and allow time for joining instructions to be sent to delegates. That said, if you have an urgent requirement please get in touch and we will do everything we can to help.
Yes, absolutely. The First Aid at Work course is designed to take delegates from no prior knowledge to fully competent workplace first aider. Our trainers are experienced at delivering training to mixed ability groups and will ensure every delegate feels supported and confident throughout the three days.
Yes. We regularly work with organisations that need to train staff across multiple sites or in several cohorts. Please get in touch to discuss your requirements and we will put together a practical and cost-effective plan to cover all of your locations.
