Your Legal Duty to Provide Emergency First Aid at Work

Every employer in the UK has a statutory obligation to ensure adequate first aid provision is in place. This is not optional — it is a legal requirement under two key pieces of legislation that apply to every workplace, in every industry, regardless of size or sector.

Our FAIB-regulated Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is the recognised route to meeting your compliance obligations for lower-risk workplaces, providing your designated first aiders with the essential qualification they need to act effectively and lawfully in a workplace emergency.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) acknowledges FAIB as a recognised industry body, and FAIB membership requires all training providers to undergo independent monitoring — ensuring your team receives a consistently high standard of training.

Relevant Legislation

⚖️
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSAWA)

Requires all employers to provide a safe working environment, which includes appropriate first aid provision for all employees.

📋
Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981

Places a duty on employers to conduct a needs assessment and provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities, and trained personnel.

HSE GEIS3 Guidance

HSE guidance recognises FAIB-regulated qualifications as meeting workplace first aid training standards. FAIB is recognised by both the HSE and the Department for Education.

Why FAIB Regulated

Why Choose a FAIB Accredited EFAW Course?

FAIB was established in 2012 specifically to fill the quality assurance gap created when the HSE withdrew from directly approving first aid training providers.

🏛️

HSE Recognised Body

FAIB is recognised by the Health and Safety Executive and the Department for Education/Ofsted. It is an original member of the First Aid Quality Partnership (FAQP).

All FAIB training providers are independently monitored and inspected. Many inspectors are the same professionals who previously carried out visits for the HSE.

📜

👨‍🏫

Qualified Trainers Only

Every trainer must be registered on the FAIB Trainer/Assessor register, hold a current FAW certificate, a formal teaching qualification and be monitored annually.

📊

Meets HSE GEIS3 Standards

FAIB qualifications are mapped to the HSE's GEIS3 guidance document, giving employers confidence that their training meets the required standard.

FAQ

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Course — Frequently Asked Questions

The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is a 1-day qualification covering essential emergency first aid skills — it is designed for lower-risk workplaces with smaller numbers of employees. The First Aid at Work (FAW) course is a 1-day qualification covering a much broader range of injuries and illnesses, and is required in higher-risk or larger workplaces. Your choice should be guided by your workplace risk assessment.
Yes. FAIB is recognised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Department for Education. FAIB is an original member of the First Aid Quality Partnership (FAQP). The EFAW certificate issued is recognised across the UK as meeting the requirements of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981.
The EFAW certificate is valid for 3 years. It is important to requalify before it expires — the HSE states that a first aider whose certificate has lapsed is no longer considered competent to act in that role. To renew, delegates simply attend another 1-day EFAW course before their certificate expires.
There is no fixed legal number — it is determined by your workplace risk assessment. As a general guide, the EFAW qualification is considered appropriate for lower-risk workplaces with fewer than 25 employees, or as a supporting qualification in larger organisations alongside FAW-trained first aiders. We are happy to advise based on your specific circumstances.
Absolutely — we bring the training directly to you. Your FAIB-registered trainer arrives at your premises fully equipped to deliver the course. You simply provide a suitable room with enough space for practical activities. On-site delivery means no travel time or costs for your team and minimal disruption to your working day.
The EFAW course covers the core emergency first aid skills required by the HSE, including CPR and AED use, managing an unconscious casualty, choking, severe bleeding and wound management, shock, burns, seizures, minor injuries and RIDDOR reporting. It is a focused and practical 6-hour programme designed to give delegates the confidence to respond effectively in an emergency.
Yes, absolutely. No prior first aid knowledge or experience is required. The EFAW course is designed to be accessible and practical for everyone. Our trainers are experienced at delivering engaging, supportive training to mixed ability groups and will ensure every delegate feels confident by the end of the day.
Delegates should wear comfortable clothing suitable for practical activity, as the course includes hands-on exercises including floor-based CPR. They should bring a photo ID and any relevant medical information the trainer should be aware of. All training materials, equipment and mannikins are provided by us.
We recommend booking at least 1 to 2 weeks in advance to secure your preferred dates. However, if you have an urgent requirement please get in touch and we will do everything we can to accommodate you. We are flexible and aim to make booking as easy as possible.
Yes — many organisations use a combination of EFAW and FAW qualifications across different teams and sites. EFAW is ideal for lower-risk or smaller teams, while FAW covers higher-risk roles. We are happy to discuss a training plan that covers your whole organisation cost-effectively and practically.
